This 1880s Opera Is Still Hilarious – See for Yourself During A Topsy Turvy Mikado

This Friday, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston presents A Topsy Turvy Mikado, a new take on an old favorite based in Victorian England. Join in on the fun at Hobby Center on Friday, July 19th at 8:00 p.m. to witness this play!

The Mikado is one of the most popular G&S operas, and for good reason. This comic opera finds both Gilbert and Sullivan at the height of their creative powers, producing songs of soaring beauty and rollicking wit, not to mention ridiculous plotlines and indelible characters. A Topsy Turvy Mikado keeps all these elements while taking audience members somewhere new.

Opera fans new and old will gain a fresh perspective of the original D’Oyly Carte production of the classic Mikado. The play within a play, guided by international 30-year HG&S star director and performer, Alistair Donkin, takes place in 1885 during one of the final rehearsals before opening night.

Based on historical records and hilarious behind the scenes happenings, it features a surprise appearance by W.S. Gilbert who strives to prepare the original actors for their roles, plus all the songs and dialogue fans know and love. Additionally, the production will give unexpected insight into how an opera is created.

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston is a non-profit, all-volunteer company which, since 1952, has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the delightful legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan's wonderful operas. As an internationally award-winning stalwart of the arts community, the Society is proudest of showcasing young talent for Houston audiences, as well as awarding more than 100 scholarships to vocal performance and theatre tech students over the years.

The international debut of this unique and genuine performance can be enjoyed by the whole family. Don’t miss your chance to experience the unique production of a Gilbert & Sullivan favorite! Tickets start at $33.35 plus applicable fees and are available online at or at Hobby Center.
